Our Story

Every business has a story. We’re here to help you with yours so we thought we better start by sharing ours. Co-founded in 1997, Giles & Liew was the brain child of two enterprising business women who wanted it all – the chance to step out of the shadows of the “Big Boys” club and into the limelight of business, on their terms. If there was anybody that said that women weren’t made for this life, these founding partners proved them wrong, leaving corporate careers at PwC New Zealand to establish Giles & Liew Chartered Accountants. Giles & Liew tells the true story of success.  For twenty years the Giles & Liew team have worked alongside many business owners to successfully grow their businesses and have built up a strong reputation for providing trusted Accounting and Tax Compliance services to clients from Auckland to the Bay of Plenty, with multiple office relocations and the opening of four Giles & Liew branches, the split of the business and the rebranding and transformation of Giles & Liew to service the new era of modern business led by founding partner Dawn Liew.

1997

After seventeen years at PwC, the Giles & Liew founding partners decide to go against the grain and embark on a business venture together, starting Giles & Liew from a home basement in Glenbrook.

Servicing a handful of clients from a home office environment, the duo met with local clients on their turf, a stark contrast to the corporate environment the duo had become accustomed.

Focusing on doing a great job for clients, in many cases saving them thousands of dollars, word soon gets out that top corporate accountants were offering high level services at very reasonable prices and the business snowballs, quickly outgrowing the home office premises.

1998-2003

Giles & Liew purchase a house on Great South Road in Papatoetoe, renovate the house into offices and relocate the business. The business continues to expand and various family members and staff are brought in to service the client base. As a mother of three, Dawn divides her time during this period between the Papatoetoe office and her home office. More space is needed and new premises are sought.

2004-2007

Giles & Liew purchase an 11 acre farm on Mill Road in Manukau, build a large office and relocate the business. The business continues to expand, purely by word of mouth referrals and further staff are brought on.

2008-2010

Giles & Liew purchase and relocate the Manukau office to commercial premises in Ryan Place and the business continues to grow and thrive, purely referral based.

Finding more and more clientele in Waihi and bursting at the seams with staff, Giles & Liew purchase premises on Rosemont Road in Waihi and a new Giles & Liew branch is started up in a more accessible office space. The Giles & Liew recipe for business success becomes a winning formula in the provinces and further expansion into the Coromandel is considered.

2011-2013

Thinking there might be a market for Giles & Liew in Tauranga, a test branch is started up from residential premises in Tauranga before quickly outgrowing such and a larger office space is acquired on Edgecumbe Road, with further staff employed to service the client base.
All three branches continue to expand.

2014

An office in Katikati is opened and the Giles & Liew presence is established on Main Road.

With a view to future succession planning, the founding partners split the business and Dawn continues as principal of the Auckland office.

2015-2016

Giles & Liew assess the needs of clients operating in the Auckland market and deem an expansion of services practicable and launch upon a brand repositioning campaign to drive new business strategies and keep abreast of current market trends. A new era of Giles & Liew Chartered Accountants is born with a renewed focus to challenge the stereotype and create success internally to ensure the team can champion client future success.

2017-2018

Giles & Liew relocate to new premises in Botany Junction. There is a strategic focus towards creating efficiencies internally and streamlining processes so as to better service client needs. The firm adopts a technology focused approach to driving client business success, helping clients to transition onto accounting systems to future-proof their business success. The business continues to grow and expand.

Giles & Liew picks up industry recognition for their business transformation, with Kylie Liew receiving MYOB Accountant of the Year and Innovator of the Year 2018 and the firm receiving MYOB Connected Practice of the Year 2018.
